Pay taxes, get them refunded twice and claim it’s legal: that’s a cum-ex deal. In Germany, the young tax lawyer Sven Lebert and his boss Dr. Bernd Hausner extend this scheme to private investors and develop a global network of banks, lawyers and investors to steal billions from European citizens. In Denmark, tax officials Inger Brøgger and Niels Jensen watch helplessly as state funds disappear in a similar scheme, while seemingly receiving little support from bankers or politicians. When Niels is confronted with financial difficulties and personal pressure, he also loses his moral compass and betrays the Danish state. In Germany, public prosecutor Lena Birkwald uncovers the gigantic fraud and encounters fierce resistance from banks and politicians. Determined to prevent the usual outcome – only the small fish are caught, while the masterminds get away scot-free – she fights tirelessly to bring the real culprits to justice.
